The number of medicinal cannabis prescriptions in August fell 5% from July, but still surpassed 5,000 for the second successive month.

According to data published by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), prescriptions through category B of the Special Access Scheme totalled 5,270, down from a record high the previous month of 5,564.

Despite the fall, the figure is 82% higher than August 2019.

It brings the year-to-date number of prescriptions cleared by the TGA to 33,617.

The number of Authorised Prescribers climbed from 94 to 103.
