The medicinal cannabis industry must take recent criticism on the chin and start to self-regulate if it wants to avoid external intervention, argues Dr Nic Giummarra.
Like many of you, I’ve been closely following the recent discussions sparked by the AMA, Psychiatry College, and Pharmacy Guild’s call for the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to reconsider medicinal cannabis prescribing under the Special Access Scheme (SAS).

Great article Dr Nic
John
Very much agreed Nic.
The foundation of medicine comes from a therapeutic alliance between a clinician and the patient. This alliance should first and foremost be for the betterment of the patient’s health & wellness. Models of streamlined MC prescribing regards a consultation as a transactional process, rather than a unified exploration of problems & solutions.
Don’t throw out the baby (good practices of medicine with good outcomes), with the bathwater (fast medicine, consumerism, unhealthy self-directed medicating habits).
