A newly formed industry group spearheaded by Cannabis Council Australia (CCA) to help shape an overhaul of medicinal cannabis quality standards has held its inaugural meeting.

TGO 93, the set of minimum quality standards drawn up by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for medicinal cannabis products, is due to sunset on 1 April 2027.

CCA’s TGO 93 working party brings together members of its reform working group and additional “sector leaders and experts” to contribute to the remaking of the order.

Members acknowledged that “even small changes could have commercial implications” for the industry, CCA said, adding the TGA had indicated sponsors would be given a transition period to adjust to any new requirements.

Chief executive Lisa Penlington said submissions to the TGA reform consultation last year showed industry support for an “uplift” in TGO 93 standards.

“Once our initial draft on the remaking of the TGO Order 93 is further advanced, we expect to consult more widely across the sector, with the aim of aligning on the key changes to be made to TGO 93,” she said.

The TGA has yet to open a consultation into TGO 93.
