Senator Tom Davis

South Carolina senators have approved the use of medicinal cannabis in the state, voting in favour of the Compassionate Care Act by a 28-15 margin.

The bill, proposed by Republican Senator Tom Davis who previously described it as one of the most conservative in the country, had bipartisan support and opposition in the Senate.

In the end, 17 Republicans voted in favour, while 10 opposed. It faces one more vote before going to the House, which must approve it before the general assembly session ends in May or it will die.

Republican Governor Henry McMaster has so far refused to say what he might do if the bill reaches his desk.
