Medical Cannabis Australia (MCA) takes its regulatory roadshow to Brisbane this week with chief executive Sharon Bentley stressing the events are helping the sector take “real steps forward”.

The Duty of Care program, which brings together medical practitioners, pharmacists and regulatory experts, kicked off in Melbourne last month and heads to Queensland on Thursday before concluding in Sydney on December 3.

The roadshows are centred around the dos and don’ts of prescribing and dispensing with discussions led by Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association chair, Dr Teresa Nicoletti, and Cannabis Clinicians Australia head Dr David Gunn.

Among the discussions at the Melbourne gathering was a focus on the often-complex state regulations, with MCA now producing a state-by-state regulatory desktop guide to enable clinicians to “stay informed and feel confident when prescribing”.

Bentley said the Duty of Care roadshows – which follow on from a similar series of events last year – have sparked much-needed discussion and brought clarity to sometimes confusing regulatory issues.

“Our first Duty of Care event brought together a remarkable group of doctors, nurses, pharmacists and experts in the field who are leading the way in medicinal cannabis,” the MCA boss said. “The discussions were intelligent, constructive and focused on clinical best practice. It’s exactly the kind of dialogue our industry needs right now.

“We are making real steps forward as a sector, building stronger connections between prescribers, pharmacists and industry, and continuing to raise the standard of care for patients who benefit from medicinal cannabis.”

The Brisbane event takes place this Thursday, November 13, at the Calile Hotel, while the Sydney roadshow is being held on Wednesday December 3 at 12-Micron in Barangaroo.
