Legalise Cannabis WA MPs Dr Brian Walker and Sophia Moermond were the only two members of the state’s upper house to oppose a motion supporting mandated vaccines for politicians this week.
The motion gives MPs until January 31, 2022 to provide proof they are double vaccinated or have a valid medical exemption. Those failing to comply will be suspended from attending parliament during a lockdown or similar restrictions.
A motion from Moermond suggesting members be allowed to attend parliament virtually instead failed to pass.
She insisted she was not opposed to vaccines, but described mandated medical treatments as a “slippery slope”.
She added: “It is your body, it is your choice whether you have (the vaccine) or not. It is not my business, and it certainly is no business of the state.”
On Tuesday, Moermond tabled a petition in parliament with 3,483 signatories claiming the Covid-19 vaccine “does not work and is a serious threat to health”. She has so far refused to disclose whether she is vaccinated.
