Legalise Cannabis Queensland candidate Fabrice Jarry scored a creditable 4.8% (1,158) of first preference votes in the Callide by-election at the weekend.
The Liberal National Party’s Bryson Head retained the seat in a run off with Labor’s Bronwyn Dendle, having scored 71.4% in the two-candidate preferred count at the time of writing.
The state seat was vacated by LNP member Colin Boyce, who successfully contested the seat of Flynn in May’s federal election.
As a prescribed medicinal cannabis patient and advocate, Jarry campaigned for a state subsidy until recreational use is legalised.
The result comes as it was finally confirmed that One Nation leader Pauline Hanson had hung on to her Senate seat under a stiff challenge from Legalise Cannabis Australia candidate Bernie Bradley.
