Medicinal Cannabis Users Association President Debra Lynch has announced it is registering the Legalise Cannabis Queensland Party with eight candidates ready to stand in the sunshine state.

Lynch, who ran for the federal senate as the Drug Law Reform Party candidate in 2016, will stand against sitting LNP member Ray Stevens in Mermaid Beach. Author and cannabis activist Dr John Jiggens will run in South Brisbane.

Lynch suffers from a rare auto-immune disease and is fighting possession charges from 2017.

She told the Gold Coast Bulletin she was frustrated by the difficulties in accessing legal, affordable medicinal cannabis.

“I have been a public hospital patient for six years and tried to get a prescription. Although every doctor in Queensland can now prescribe it many won’t, and private clinics that specialise in it are now far too expensive.”

“The legal market is often twice or triple the price,” she added.
