The industry is being asked to fund the completion of a new documentary on medicinal cannabis in a bid to counter a slew of negative press coverage in recent months.
In Plain Sight is the brainchild of film-maker Jay Richards and backed by United in Compassion co-founder Lucy Haslam. Richards has already shot hours of footage with patients and industry leaders to create a trailer.
A previous fundraising campaign paid for the initial shoot, but more funds are needed to complete the project and find a distributor. The aim is to raise A$200,000 and release the film in 2025.
Haslam said: “The limited amount of money we originally raised to get the project off the ground has gone a very long way thanks to Jay’s commitment. The reel gives us something to demonstrate what we are trying to do.
“Unfortunately, it has been all bad news in the medicinal cannabis space for some time now with unethical and profit-driven behaviour putting patients at risk and harming the reputation of the industry. I think it is time we tried to reverse this situation.
“This can only benefit the industry so I hope the companies in it will help us to see the documentary through to completion.”

Well done guys! Telling the story eloquently, truthfully and without bias is a great contribution to the future of cannabis in Australia. I’m not sure about no recreational use, as people seem to want to use it however they see fit, and everyone has their own reason.
I hope we can, as a community, figure out a pragmatic framework for the future that observes public risk, patient outcomes, and responsible use.
The first step was huge, our patients have access to cannabis medicine and that will endure. However, it’s time to consider broader reform around access! We know it doesn’t quite fit as a pure S8, so removing our personal opinion and bias, reviewing other jurisdictions and social impact, and developing a working model is the next step.
