The industry has called for more comprehensive data on reported harms of cannabis after research identified a sharp rise in cannabinoid-related hospitalisations in Victoria over a 10-year period.

Monash University found the total number of hospital admissions involving cannabis hit almost 40,000 in the decade to 2023, up 50% from 2013.

  1. We need to be clear about what is actually being recorded. The simple fact of the presence of THC metabolites in a urinary drug screen would say nothing at all about acute intoxication effects, but is routinely used to document “Cannabis Use Disorder” which may be inflating the true numbers by an order or two of magnitude. CUD itself is not an accurate description because anyone using – say for example – blood pressure medication would be diagnoseable as having a “blood pressure use disorder”. The institutions can skew the discussion using figures based on illusions rather than actual cause/effect and hence we need to be aware of the attacks on the industry arising from that perceptual bias.
