Cannaponics has appointed Tammy O’Connor as director to work alongside director of brand management and product development Pamella Zakostelsky as the firm seeks to “blaze trails for women and First Nations people in the new era of cannabis in Australia”.

O’Connor is the founder of KingKira Group, a 100% indigenous female-owned business which provides a range of environmental management services to the mining industry.

She also served as a company director for Pilbara Environmental Services, a joint venture with ASX 100 company Cleanaway, for nearly a decade.

She said: “I have a wealth of knowledge and experience with native title, working with local communities, and providing education and guidance to help communities and businesses achieve sustainable development.”

“The work that we do is driven by a passion to both protect the environment and to create opportunities for people in our communities and lands on which we operate. We strive to manage all aspects of our environment to ensure it remains sustainable for years to come.

“We aim to provide people opportunities that empower them to take control of their future, and hopefully inspire others to become business owners.”

Cannaponics said it was “making strides towards becoming Australia’s leading employer of Aboriginal team members”.

Zakostelsky added: “Speaking with our director of cultivation about the types of tasks and care that is required to successfully grow the quality and consistent cannabis we are aiming for, it resonated with me that we should be looking for more women to fill out our plant caregiver roles.

“With her connection to indigenous communities and local land, it is only natural we should look first to those women like Tammy who have such a strong sense of family and community, while having cared for the land for thousands of years.”
