The Australian Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) is seeking feedback on its long-awaited Nursing Scope of Practice Guideline 2025.

The document features six standards – assessment, care planning, implementation, evaluation, ethics and advocacy – with advice for nurses working with medicinal cannabis patients.

Simone O’Brien

ACNA is a sub-association of the Australian Medicinal Cannabis Association (AMCA) and was established during the inaugural Medicinal Cannabis Awareness Week in February 2023 to provide a forum for nurses and nurse practitioners working with endocannabinoid therapies.

The guideline has been reviewed by registered nurses Jodie Davis and Deb Ranson and nurse practitioners Simone O’Brien and Jane O’Connell.

O’Brien, ACNA’s Director of Clinical, told members: “As with any Scope of Practice Guideline, you still own your scope and you work within it, based on your education, training and skills. I am sure that you will all be able to identify where you sit within the six standards.”

The new document will be reviewed in 12 months.
