The Victorian Government has said Cann Group’s Mildura facility will help it achieve its goal of supplying half of Australia’s medicinal cannabis before the end of the decade.

According to a statement on Premier Daniel Andrews’ website, the project is expected to create hundreds of jobs and almost A$200 million for the local economy.

Cann Group’s Mildura facility

It adds: “Leading grower and processor Cann Group is close to completing its ground-breaking $115 million cultivation and processing facility in Mildura which is on track to cement Victoria as a leader in the medicinal cannabis sector.

“The project is expected to deliver $191 million to the Mildura regional economy and aligns with the Labor Government’s medical cannabis industry development strategy to supply half of Australia’s medicinal cannabis by 2028.”

The Government said the project has already supported 133 jobs during construction, with 16 full-time equivalent employees currently working at the facility and a workforce of 40 expected to be in place by December. It has been supported by the regional jobs fund.

This week, Cann announced it has received a second milestone payment of $500,000 from the fund — which is worth nearly $2 million to the firm in total — having met the necessary requirements.

CEO Peter Crock said: “We appreciate the ongoing support that Cann Group has received from the Victorian government. We are proud to be supporting regional communities with new jobs in a growing industry.”

When completed, the 13.5-hectare facility will have the capacity to grow up to 70,000 kilograms of dried cannabis flower and will feature a fully automated glasshouse, laboratory, testing facility and cultivation rooms.

Minister for regional development Mary-Anne Thomas said: “We’re supporting more jobs through this game-changing project, ensuring Victoria is at the forefront of Australia’s emerging medicinal cannabis industry.”

MP for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp added: “This facility is unique to Mildura and is accelerating the future potential of a crucial industry. The medicinal cannabis industry is growing rapidly and Victoria is well placed to compete in the sector.”
