Members of Queensland’s Labor party have called for the legalisation of recreational cannabis, but the state government remains opposed to the move.
The Brisbane Times reports members decided the updated policy platform at the party’s state conference late last year, but only finalised and released the details recently.
As well as legalising small quantities of cannabis for personal use, the document urged the Labor government to adopt a harm-reduction approach to drug use in the state and undertake a full review of its law-enforcement strategy.
However, the government said it has no plans to act on any of the suggested reforms.
While all party members are able to vote on the policy platform, it is not binding on the government to implement it when in power.
