Drug-driving lobby group Drive Change has launched a crowdfunding campaign in its bid to win equal driving rights for medicinal cannabis patients with a seed donation of A$5,000 from MedReleaf Australia.

The group is looking to raise $70,000 via a GoFundMe campaign in order to fund a full-time human resource to help educate law enforcement and lobby state governments on drug-driving reform.

Campaign supporter and MedReleaf Australia executive director Nathan Davis said drastic change is required.

“This is the single biggest issue for patient access in Australia since legal medical cannabis was established by the TGA many years ago.”

He added: “It is a change that is long overdue to give equality to patients regardless of the medication their doctor prescribes.”

Dean of Law at Southern Cross University and Drive Change campaigner David Heilpern said: “While the campaign has achieved some traction over the last 18 months, support from the industry and community is crucial to not only continue the work that we do… but to ensure we are able to change these unfair and discriminatory laws.”

Today (Wednesday), Legalise Cannabis Victoria launched the latest bid to stop medicinal cannabis patients from being prosecuted under the state’s drug-driving laws.

The Road Safety Amendment (Medicinal Cannabis) Bill 2023 would protect patients who have been prescribed THC – and taken it in line with their GP’s instructions – from being prosecuted.
